GIOVANI D’ARTE – ART COMPETITION and EXHIBITIONS

From March 19th to April 2nd, 2011 I took part with my artwork TRANSPARENT MAN in the first “Giovani d’Arte” Art Competition and Exhibition, organized by Museo delle Sculture Iperspaziali “Attilio Pierelli”, Bomarzo  (www.museopierelli.it)   and Associazione ComunicArte in cooperation with Comune di Bomarzo.

I classified as runner up and this was the opinion of the Jury:

The work was particularly appreciated for its belonging to the Italian tradition. It is permeated by metaphysical suggestions, which recall De Chirico’s manikins, eased by oneiric values. In a metal net housing transparent, opaque and reflecting surfaces, Cannone draws a dialectical interplay of full and void spaces, suitable to express the eternal question of human condition. The incommunicable, the ineffable, the ephemeral, take possession of the man-manikin like a cobweb, a cage, which paradoxically does not hide him, revealing, instead, the only one of possible encounters in a no man’s land where Transparent man speaks to us, mute, of a neo-metaphysical in-existence and in-consistence. (By art critic Dr Barbara Aniello)

Here I am with the winner, artist Patrick Alò, and the organizer and curator of the exhibition, Dr Pàmela Mezzasalma.

**********

As runner up in the first “Giovani d’Arte” competition, I’ve been given the opportunity to take part in the second “Giovani d’Arte” Collective Exhibition with three pieces: VISIBLE MAN, WORN-OUT BOX FOR ERRORS and TUBI. The exhibition, which was curated by MERZBAU Arte e Cultura (www.merzbau.it) and was part of the Settimana della Cultura, organized by Associazione ComunicArte in cooperation with several other institutions (see leaflet: BOMARZO – SETTIMANA DELLA CULTURA 2011),  took  place from 21st to 28th May 2011 at Palazzo Orsini, Bomarzo. It was accompanied by a series of events at Museo delle Sculture Iperspaziali “Attilio Pierelli”.

With me in the fourth picture: exhibiting artist Valentina Melis, Dr Pàmela Mezzasalma, organizer, and her daughter Egle. In the fifth picture – with me, Valentina Melis and her artworks – the exhibition curators, Dr Paola Donato and Dr Loris Schermi (www.merzbau.it). With me in the sixth picture: Dr Barbara Aniello and Dr Pàmela Mezzasalma.

On occasion of the closing conference, entitled “Dialoghi inter artes: lo Spazio, il Tempo, il Suono nella scultura di Attilio Pierelli” (speakers: Prof. Elisabetta Cristallini, Prof. Arturo Vittori, Dr. Barbara Aniello), I had the honour of making the acquaintance of the internationally well-known architect and designer Professor Arturo Vittori (www.architectureandvision.com, http://www.architectureandvision.com/av/team.html), brother of the astronaut Roberto Vittori (http://www.robertovittori.it/). Many thanks to Professor Vittori for posing with me.

PROFONDO ON DISPLAY AT THE SAATCHI GALLERY

Saatchi Gallery Mess, King’s Road, London

Situated in what used to be the Duke of York’s HQ on the King’s Road, Saatchi Gallery Mess knocks the socks off other gallery caffs and is a great addition to the area, offering simple, well-prepared dishes from breakfast ‘til close. A long and lean canteen is light, bright and stylish. Vitra furniture and Pantone salt & pepper shakers contrast yet complement the Georgian architecture.

Room with a view

Oodles of contemporary art reminds you that there is more to be seen in the Saatchi Gallery which fills the 4 floors above. Our table was near a sculpture by Marco Cannone a hollow head and torso made from stained glass – yours for £25,000. If that price-tag is a little steep (and all the art is available for purchase) rejoice that you don’t have to spend a fortune on your dinner – main courses hover around £11, and are generous portions.

Essential eating

The menu is designed by Rhubarb, some of the best event caterers around, and they’ve made intelligent choices. Dishes are simple and well executed. Chorizo salad followed by sea bream with caponata and rocket? Or perhaps prawn cocktail (with a yummy bloody Mary sauce) followed by Pork Belly?

Nigella’s influence is felt throughout the menu (though the one thing it lacks is a good steak) and, indeed, it’s rumoured she sampled everything on the menu before giving the thumbs up. There is also a decent kids menu, which at £9.95 for two courses is great value.

I want to be alone

A private dining room upstairs would be a stylish choice for any function and can seat 40 for dinner or 60 for standing drinks.

Afternoon tea on the pretty outside terrace.

Gallery Mess, Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, London SW3

The Gallery Mess is housed in the old Duke of York’s officers’ mess where exposed brickwork emerges from white-painted ceilings and arches, while neon installations add a touch of sophistication

The only officers’ mess I’ve ever seen is on screen: the one in Cairo in Lawrence of Arabia, into which Peter O’Toole walks wearing his battle-scarred Arab robes and supporting a knackered Arab boy with whom he’s just, triumphantly, walked through the desert. I remember the British officers holding pink gins, radiating disapproval and telling off the adventurer (“Now look here, Lawrence …”) for going native, poncing about in a djellaba and (“Throw them out, somebody …”) bringing his frightful Ganymede chum into the mess with him. I don’t remember seeing any food. And it would have smacked of pretension if T E Lawrence had, in such circumstances, asked for a lunch menu and ordered the venison carpaccio.

The Gallery Mess is a lot more welcoming. It’s the new restaurant at the Saatchi Gallery, housed in the old Duke of York’s officers’ mess. Walking in from the King’s Road, your spirits lift in the long front bar behind which a hundred bottles of Veuve Clicquot and a few score homemade loaves and bags of coffee adorn the shelves, their multiplicity making them shimmer like an Andy Warhol array of soup cans. You can eat in here, gazing out the window to the Gallery lawn, or stroll through into the more enclosed sections. It soon feels like you’re in a gallery: exposed brickwork emerges from white-painted ceilings and arches, while neon installations add a touch of sophistication (though I suspect the neon red-headed woman on all fours, apparently emitting stars and moons from her bottom under the word “Forgiveness”, might put some diners off their soup).

My date Madeleine and I sat in the main dining room, under scores of recessed lights. It’s very stripped-down, with round white tables, simple green chairs, white gallery walls and artworks. If you’ve a few hundred quid to spare, you can buy the smaller pictures, eg of a dead sparrow and a mouse in a trap by Joss McKinley, though the head and shoulders of a man done in a beautiful mosaic will set you back £25,000.

Here are some pictures showing PROFONDO in the fantastic setting where it is being displayed.
I owe some of them (those starting from the fourth) to my friend SIMON TOLHURST (in the last photo with his beautiful piece DIMITRA), who was so kind as to take them when he recently visited the exhibition.
Simon was with me in the first Showdown competition final, and his winning artwork is currently on display in the Private Dining Room/Gallery on the first floor.

Having been kindly invited to the private view of Saatchi Gallery’s exhibition Newspeak: British Art Now, I took the opportunity to go and see PROFONDO at Gallery Mess.

I am particularly proud to show this picture of me and Alberto taken during the 1st June private view. I met him on occasion of the opening of the new Saatchi Gallery in October 2008, and it was a real pleasure to meet him again.
